OUGD402 // Speaking From Experience // Hand Drawn Illustrations

I decided i wanted the illustrations to be in a scrappy hand-drawn style so decided to go straight for pen to paper with not much digital editing, other than colour changes, textures, patterns and clean-ups. I wanted the illustrations to look almost 'child-like' as i felt that this would appeal to me target audience of students. When i was illustrating my original ideas, i decided to hold my pen looser than i would normally to create perfect lines. This way, the illustrations have come out the way i wanted them which was a little bit scrappy. Here are the scans of the first lot that i did...

Telephone - 'Don't Ring in Sick'
Books - 'Use The Library'
Pool Balls - 'Play Pool at Brudenell'

Macbook - 'Buy a macbook'
Screen Printing - 'Inductions/Experiment'

Hifi Logo - Places to go

Abu Bakar - 'supermarket to buy cheap meat'

Chopped tomatoes and pasta - 'cheapest meal'

condom - 'free condoms'

Printer - 'befriend james/get the most out of the digital dungeon'

Hyde Park Picture House - 241 Tuesdays

Cheap Bowling Mondays

Brudenell Social Club Logo (in the style of John Smiths logo)

Wire Logo - 'Don't Go To Wire'

Unhappy Eggs -  'Buy caged eggs/no morals'

Nation of shopkeepers - places to go

To Do List - 'Make Lists'

Trees/Path - 'Don't wonder through Hyde Park after hours'

Nation of Shopkeeper Logos

Credit Card - 'Hide Your Credit Card'

Stop Smoking Sign

Red Stripe - 'Sneak into Nation'

I Then took these scrappy illustrations and scanned them in to work back into them digitally. I didn't want to clean the lines up so i just make the background brilliant white and darkened my fine liner marks to brilliant black. I also decided to add a dotted pattern to the illustrations just to give them a little bit more tone and quality. I think it works well and creates a really nice style that would work in my booklet...
