Throughout my last ever PPP Presentation, I wanted to take everyone on a journey from the start of time here at LCA through to where I'm at now. I did this by showing previous work and picking out positives and negatives out of each year to bring me up to where I am now, ready to go into industry.
After this, I talked a little bit about some work that I've creating this year and how it reflects the direction I want to head in as a designer. I also talked a little bit about my future, my job at Uniform, which as a Junior Designer will start in the Summer, and also about moving out of Leeds and into Liverpool. Finally, I talked a little bit about even bigger future plans about maybe setting up a smaller studio with a couple of other people on the course...
First Year - Learning The Basics
First Year was all about learning the basics of Graphic Design, a lot based around Type and Grid and learning the rules before being able to break them. This learning curve was a steep one, and one that has helped inform my practice today....
First Year - Following Trends
First year I also started to follow trends within Graphic Design which is not a great thing to do. However, I was glad I did this because it helped me to find a good sense of asthetics within the design and what looks good and what doesn't, even if the design was essentially pointless and not really viable, it was still helping to improve my eye for design which I'm thankful for...
Second Year - Branding
I fell in love with Branding in a second year, and this is when my specialism started to emerge. However, the kind of branding I was creating was a lot stronger than previous work but was also still lacking a little bit conceptually which I started to build on towards the end of second year through workshops and personal development etc...
Second Year - Republic Job
I talked a bit about the part-time job that I had in second year. i used to work every Friday as a menswear designer for fashion brand, Republic. Here is some examples of the kind of work I was creating which is a million miles away from the work I do now, or the work I wanted to be doing. This job was really beneficial to me because it helped me learn where I didn't want to work in the future...
Second Year - YCN Award
I also talked briefly about the YCN Award that I won in the second year, this was a huge confident boost to know that the work I was creating was on the right lines, good enough to win awards...
Second Year - Concepts
I started to develop conceptual design more towards the end of the second year and I set myself a benchmark with this brief i did for The British Independent Film Festival. This is when my design started to become more concept led, including a lot of copy writing and a whole cohesive brand experience rather than just a single brand mark applied over and over...
Third Year - Concepts
I then went into third year and how I built on that last brief of second year to use it as a benchmark to then go on and build brands that are more cohesive and extensive...
Other Areas of Design
I talked about other areas of design I've delved into this year such as spatial design and digital design and video, areas I want to pursue in the future...
Liverpool & Uniform
I then went on to talk about starting my new Junior Designer Role at Uniform and moving from Leeds to Liverpool!
